Proximate analysis

Proximate analysis of food, feed and raw materials

We measure moisture, protein, fat, ash, crude fibre and carbohydrate in food, agricultural products and animal feed, giving you the basic composition data you need for quality control, labelling and formulation.

Proximate analysis lab

What is proximate analysis?

Proximate analysis is the measurement of the main components of a food or feed: moisture, protein, fat, ash, crude fibre and carbohydrate, which together describe its basic nutritional composition.

Accurate Universal Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. performs proximate analysis on food products, cereals, pulses, oilseeds, spices, animal feed, dairy products and raw materials, using standard methods for each component.

Manufacturers use the results to check raw material quality, control formulation, prepare nutrition labels and meet FSSAI and BIS specifications.

Importance of proximate analysis

Ensuring product quality and nutritional accuracy

Composition drives price, quality and compliance. Knowing exactly how much moisture, protein and fat a product contains helps you buy better raw material and make consistent products.

Gas chromatograph used in proximate and fatty acid analysis

Accurate composition data

Reliable values for the six basic components of your product.

Quality assurance

Check every batch against your specification.

Raw material control

Pay for protein and oil content, not moisture.

Product consistency

Keep formulations and finished products uniform.

Nutrition labelling support

The base data for energy and nutrient calculations.

Regulatory compliance

Meet FSSAI and BIS composition requirements.

How it works

From sample to composition report in five steps

  1. Step 1

    Share your requirement

Tell us the product, purpose and market. We recommend the right tests and send a quotation.

  2. Step 2

Send the sample or book pickup

Courier a sealed sample to our Ahmedabad or Rajkot laboratory, or book a sample pickup.

  3. Step 3

    Laboratory analysis

Each component is measured by its standard method with quality-control checks.

  4. Step 4

    Accredited report

Results as a percentage of the sample, ready for your specification or label.

  5. Step 5

    Technical support

Our team explains the results and advises on next steps if a value is out of limit.

FAQs

Proximate Analysis: common questions

What is proximate analysis?

Proximate analysis measures the main components of a food or feed: moisture, protein, fat, ash, crude fibre and carbohydrate. Together they describe the product's basic nutritional composition.

Why is proximate analysis important?

It shows the quality and nutritional value of a product, helps control raw materials and formulations, and provides the base data for nutrition labels and specifications.

How is carbohydrate calculated in proximate analysis?

Carbohydrate is usually calculated by difference: 100 minus the percentages of moisture, protein, fat, ash and, where applicable, fibre.

Is proximate analysis the same as nutritional labelling?

No. Proximate analysis gives the basic composition. A nutrition label also needs values such as sugars, saturated and trans fat, sodium and energy, calculated in the format required by FSSAI or the export market.

Which products can be tested?

Food products, cereals, pulses, oilseeds, spices, flours, dairy products, animal feed and raw materials can all be tested.

How much does proximate analysis cost?

The cost depends on the components required and the product. Share your requirement and we will send an itemised quotation.

Is Accurate Universal Laboratories accredited for this testing?

Yes. Our Ahmedabad laboratory is accredited by NABL to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (certificate TC-5021) and our Rajkot laboratory under certificate TC-7988. The tests and products covered are listed in our scope of accreditation, and we confirm whether your parameters are within scope before testing.
