Importance of nutritional labelling

Helping consumers make informed food choices

A nutrition label tells shoppers how much energy, protein, sugar, fat and salt they are eating. Getting it right keeps your product compliant, builds trust in your brand and keeps export shipments moving.

Extraction unit used for fat analysis in nutritional labelling

FAQs

Nutritional Labelling Testing: common questions

What is nutritional labelling testing?

Nutritional labelling testing is the laboratory analysis of a food product to measure its energy, protein, carbohydrates, sugars, fat, saturated and trans fat, cholesterol, sodium and other nutrients. The results are used to print the nutrition information panel on the pack and to show that the label meets food regulations.

Is nutritional labelling mandatory in India?

Yes, for most pre-packaged foods. The FSSAI (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020 require nutrition information on the label, with a few exemptions such as certain unprocessed single-ingredient foods. If you make a nutrition or health claim, the claimed nutrients must also be declared.

What must a nutrition label show under FSSAI rules?

An FSSAI nutrition panel must show energy (kcal), protein, carbohydrate, total sugars, added sugars, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol and sodium, per 100 g or 100 ml (or per single-serve pack), with per-serve contribution to the Recommended Dietary Allowance where required.

Where should the values on my nutrition label come from?

The most reliable source is laboratory analysis of your actual product. Generic databases and recipe calculations can differ from your real formulation and processing, and a laboratory report is what buyers and regulators ask for when a value is questioned.

How much does nutritional labelling testing cost in India?

The cost depends on the number of parameters, the type of product and the markets you are labelling for. A basic FSSAI panel costs less than an extended panel with fatty acids, fibre, vitamins and minerals, or a panel for several export markets. Share your product and target market and we will send an itemised quotation.

How long does nutrition label testing take?

The turnaround depends on the parameters in your panel. Standard panels are quicker; tests such as fatty acid profile, dietary fibre and vitamins take longer. We confirm the exact timeline in your quotation.

How much sample do I need to send?

Usually a sealed retail pack, or a few hundred grams or millilitres of the product, is enough. Our team confirms the exact quantity for your panel when you request a quote. Send the product exactly as it is sold.

Can you test nutrition values for export labels?

Yes. We provide values for export labels for the EU, UK, USA, Gulf countries, Australia and New Zealand, each of which has its own list of nutrients, units and format. For example, EU and UK labels show salt instead of sodium, and US labels are per serving.

What happens if the values on my label are wrong?

Food with incorrect nutrition information can be treated as misbranded under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which carries a penalty of up to ₹3 lakh, and export consignments can be rejected by the importing country. Testing before you print labels avoids this.

How often should I retest my product?

Retest whenever you change the recipe, a key ingredient or supplier, or the manufacturing process, as these can change the nutrition values. Many brands also verify their labels periodically alongside routine FSSAI product testing.

Is Accurate Universal Laboratories accredited for this testing?

Yes. Accurate Universal Laboratories is accredited by NABL to ISO/IEC 17025:2017, and our reports are accepted for FSSAI compliance and export documentation.
