Swab testing

Swab testing for hands, surfaces and equipment

Our hygiene swab tests check food-contact surfaces, equipment and food handlers' hands for bacteria, so you can prove your cleaning works and stop contamination before it reaches your product.

Surface hygiene testing

What is swab testing?

Swab testing is the collection of a sample from a hand, surface or piece of equipment with a sterile swab, followed by laboratory analysis for bacteria, to check how clean that surface really is.

Accurate Universal Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. provides surface and hand swab analysis for food processing units, kitchens, hospitality, healthcare and manufacturing facilities. Swabs are tested in our microbiology section for hygiene indicators and pathogens.

Hygiene estimation of classified and non-classified areas by sterile cotton swab is part of our accredited scope, giving you dependable evidence for audits, FSSAI inspections and customer visits.

Importance of swab analysis

Ensuring hygiene, safety and contamination control

A surface can look clean and still carry bacteria. Swab testing shows whether cleaning and handwashing are working, and helps you find contamination sources before they affect a batch.

Verify surface hygiene

Measure bacteria on surfaces after cleaning to confirm your sanitation programme works.

Detect contamination

Find coliforms, E. coli and pathogens on equipment and hands.

Cleaner workplaces

Results help you retrain staff and improve cleaning schedules.

Food safety assurance

Lower the risk of cross-contamination reaching finished products.

Audit and FSSAI readiness

Documented swab records support food safety audits and inspections.

Reliable reporting

Accredited results with clear limits for each sampling point.

FAQs

Swab Testing: common questions

What is a swab test in the food industry?

It is a hygiene check in which a sterile swab is rubbed over a surface, piece of equipment or a food handler's hand, and the swab is tested in a laboratory for bacteria such as Total Plate Count, coliforms, E. coli and S. aureus.

What is the swab test procedure?

A sterile swab moistened with diluent is rubbed over a defined area, usually 10 cm × 10 cm, or over the hand, then placed in its transport tube, kept cool and delivered to the laboratory, where it is tested for the required organisms.

Who should have hand swab tests?

Food handlers in processing plants, kitchens, catering units and hotels, and staff in healthcare and pharmaceutical areas. Hand swabs show whether handwashing and glove practices are effective.

How often should swab testing be done?

It depends on your risk level and your food safety plan. Many food plants test critical food-contact points and handlers regularly, and also after cleaning changes or a quality complaint. We can help you set a frequency.

How much does swab testing cost?

It depends on the number of sampling points and the organisms tested on each. Share your sampling plan and we will send an itemised quotation.

Can you help with swab collection?

Contact us to arrange sample collection through our sample pickup service, or we can guide your staff on how to take swabs correctly and send them to the laboratory.

Is Accurate Universal Laboratories accredited for this testing?

Yes. Our Ahmedabad laboratory is accredited by NABL to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (certificate TC-5021) and our Rajkot laboratory under certificate TC-7988. The tests and products covered are listed in our scope of accreditation, and we confirm whether your parameters are within scope before testing.
